Musonye and Mvurya rally support as Kenya finalises CHAN 2024 preparations
With CHAN 2024 fast approaching, Kenya's preparations have entered a critical phase, as Local Organising Committee Chair Nicholas Musonye and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya rally support, call for unity, and outline long-term plans to strengthen local football.
With just days to the start of CHAN 2024, Kenya’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chair Nicholas Musonye has confirmed that the government is actively addressing financial and security concerns linked to the tournament. He also called for unity and engagement, particularly with Kenya’s youth, as the country prepares to host the continental event.
“We had a meeting on Monday with the Treasury, Interior and the Head of Public Service to push for urgent support. Some services crucial to the tournament risk delay if funding doesn’t come through in time,” Musonye said.

Musonye stressed that youth engagement remains central. “These are our children. This is our country and our competition. Dialogue is key - we want them to feel part of this,” he said, referring to recent Gen Z protests.
On the sidelines of these preparations, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the government is already laying the groundwork for reforms in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) ahead of the 2025/26 season.
“We now have new FKF leadership and agreed on a roadmap to restructure the league, attract sponsorships, and nurture talent from ward level upwards,” Mvurya said.
Both officials also spoke of the legacy CHAN 2024 is expected to leave behind. Musonye praised the upgrades at Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums and hinted at plans to host future international tournaments. Mvurya confirmed plans to attract more private investors and train grassroots officials and referees.
The ministry and FKF are expected to announce a comprehensive football reform plan in the coming weeks.
